Here's the difference between Jon's audience (us) and Rosie's audience (everyone else). Jon insults Kathy Lee. We giggle. Rosie's audience gasps.

 After calling Kathy Lee "the thorn" in Regis' side, and after the audience turns on him, Jon doesn't give up. He continues relentlessly and finally gets some laughs. On Letterman or Conan, he would have killed immediately. Such is the Rosie audience.
