HOLLYWOOD -- Paramount has pulled the plug on
its low-rated syndicated Jon Stewart Show. The late-night
talk show, which airs at 12:30 weeknights on WPWR-Channel 50, will
have its final broadcast on June 23.
Paramount had approached two networks about picking
up the show. But ABC balked at a post-Nightline slot, and
conversations at NBC about Stewart replacing Conan O'Brien went
nowhere. O'Brien's Late Night is generally conceded to have
improved creatively despite falling a bit short in the ratings department.
Following the cancellation, Paramount TV Group
chairman Kerry McCluggage praised Stewart and noted that the syndicator
wants to continue its relationship with him.
